Navigating life’s transitions, like starting school or moving to high school can be challenging for children and parents alike. In our Mentally Fit Primary Schools parenting webinar, Dr. Justin Coulson, a leading parenting expert, and Vicky Worland, co-founder of Gotcha4Life, shared strategies to foster mental fitness and guide children through these critical moments. The webinar focused on Gotcha4Life’s 3 evidence-based key protective factors: emotional adaptability, social connectedness, and help-seeking behaviours and how parents and carers can support their children in strengthening these skills, making it easier for them to handle life’s many changes and challenges.

Dr. Coulson opened up about his journey from struggling with emotional regulation to becoming a parenting psychologist, highlighting that transitions aren’t hurdles to fear but opportunities for growth. He emphasised that understanding children’s emotional shifts during transitions is vital in effectively supporting them through these times.

Here are our top 3 takeaways for parents from the webinar:

1. Prepare for transitions

Help children feel competent and supported through proactive steps. Familiarising them with new environments or routines can ease anxiety. Children adapt better when they are supported by strong relationships.

2. Validate emotions

Acknowledge your child’s feelings with empathy instead of dismissing them. Simple phrases like, “This feels hard, doesn’t it?” or “I can see this is hard for you” create trust and encourage open communication.

3. Build resilience through connection

Foster social bonds by encouraging playdates or group activities. Connection with peers provides emotional security during times of change.

Lead with love: Help your children face change with confidence

Transitions can be emotional, but with empathy, preparation and consistent love, parents and carers can empower their children to navigate change with confidence. Dr. Coulson reminded us that showing trust in a child’s abilities and maintaining a calm presence strengthens resilience, equipping them for life’s many challenges.
