Episode 4: Quaden Bayles on bullying, belonging and community
The fourth episode of Mental Fitness Conversations podcast features an inspiring yarn with Quaden Bayles, a 14-year-old First Nations action, award-winning advocate and activist who became a global voice against bullying. Quaden’s story has resonated across Australia and the world – from his courageous stand against bullying at school to walking the red carpet.
Quaden rose to international prominence in 2020 when a video of him in distress after being bullied at school went viral. The clip drew worldwide attention and shone a light on the long-term impacts of bullying on young people, while also showing the power of empathy, kindness and community support.
Since then, Quaden has carved out a new chapter. He’s been profiled on ABC’s Australian Story and appeared in George Miller’s films Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024).

In Episode 4, Quaden opens up about the moment his life changed overnight – from the pain of school bullying to the unexpected opportunity of starring in a Hollywood blockbuster. He speaks candidly about facing online abuse and misinformation, and how he continues to manage the pressures of social media and public attention.
What stands out most is his reflection on moving to Redfern, where culture, family and community gave him a sense of belonging and strength that he had been missing.
Quaden reminds listeners that mental fitness is not about never struggling – it’s about finding ways to keep going when life feels heavy. For him, connection to mob, the support of role models and the chance to play sport have been anchors. His message to other young people is clear: be brave, speak up and don’t let the words of others define who you are.
